Android Quick Share Gets AirDrop Support: Pixel 10 Becomes First to Enable Cross-Platform Sharing
Mumbai, July 16, 2025: Tesla, the global electric vehicle leader, has officially entered the Indian automobile market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). With this move, India becomes Tesla’s 50th international market, as the company begins selling two variants of its best-selling SUV, the Model Y.
Tesla inaugurated a 4,500 sq. metre experience centre in the heart of Mumbai on July 15, 2025. The showroom features two versions of the Model Y, in Ultra Red and Pearl White, starting at a price of ₹59.89 lakh for the rear-wheel drive (RWD) model and ₹67.89 lakh for the long-range version.
In comparison, the Model Y costs around ₹40 lakh ($46,630) in the US, highlighting the impact of India’s high import duties and logistics costs.
Tesla has begun accepting bookings, with deliveries scheduled to start:
RWD Model Y: From the December quarter
Long-Range Model Y: From the March quarter
Buyers can either make full payments or opt for vehicle loans at interest rates between 8.7% and 11%, depending on their chosen bank.
Tesla also plans to open its second showroom in Delhi in the near future.
After two years of on-road testing in India, Tesla has upgraded both variants to suit Indian driving conditions. However, Full Self-Driving (FSD) will not be active until the Indian government introduces clear autonomous driving regulations. The vehicles will come with FSD hardware and can enable the feature via over-the-air updates once legally permitted.
Tesla officials acknowledged the challenges posed by Indian roads, such as:
Irregular lane markings
Potholes
Pedestrian and animal crossings
Despite this, the Model Y will include:
Advanced emergency braking
Lane departure warning
Adaptive cruise control
Balanced suspension for urban roads
Tesla will provide two charging options:
Superchargers: High-speed public charging (15-20 minutes for full charge)
Wall Connectors: Home-based charging (approximately 7 hours)
✅ Bonus: Customers who book early will receive a free Wall Connector during the first delivery phase.
Tesla aims to install 16 Supercharger stations across Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including areas like:
Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)
Lower Parel
Thane
Navi Mumbai
According to Isabel Fan, Tesla’s South East Asia Director, the company now operates over 7,000 Supercharging stations and 70,000+ Superchargers worldwide, with 10,000 new units added in 2024 alone.
Tesla’s Indian cars will be manufactured in China and imported, as India and the US continue trade discussions—possibly addressing high import duties. This has been a long-standing demand from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed Tesla's India entry, calling it a strategic move. “This isn't just a showroom launch—it’s a clear message that Tesla is in the right state and city. Mumbai represents finance, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” said Fadnavis, recalling his first Tesla ride in the US back in 2015.
He also highlighted Maharashtra’s progressive EV policies and growing electric vehicle ecosystem, making the state an ideal location for Tesla’s expansion.
