India’s Next Aviation Hub: Navi Mumbai International Airport to Launch in June 2025

India's aviation landscape is poised for a significant transformation with the upcoming inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in June 2025. The airport spans 1,160 hectares and is designed for phased expansion, with an ultimate capacity to handle up to 90 million passengers annually. The inauguration, initially scheduled for April 17, 2025, was postponed to June to ensure the completion of all operational aspects 

Strategic Airline Shifts

With NMIA's inauguration, airlines are reevaluating their operational strategies. Initially, the airport will commence operations with approximately 30 weekly flights, primarily domestic. A more substantial shift is anticipated in the winter schedule starting from the end of October 2025 

Low-cost carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, and Akasa Air are expected to lead the transition to NMIA. These airlines aim to optimize their operations by leveraging the new airport's modern infrastructure 

Implications for CSMIA

The opening of NMIA coincides with significant changes at CSMIA. Terminal 1 is slated for demolition in October 2025 to facilitate expansion plans. During this period, approximately 5 million passengers will be redirected to Terminal 2, while the remaining 10 million are expected to utilize NMIA 

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has emphasized that airlines should not be compelled to shift operations to NMIA. Instead, a collaborative approach is encouraged to ensure a smooth transition and maintain operational efficiency
