If you have an account in Bank of Baroda (BOB) or any other bank, there’s great news: two major updates in BOB Rules for 2025!
In a historic moment for Indian infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first vertical lift sea bridge today — the new Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu. The modern marvel will significantly enhance connectivity to the sacred island of Rameswaram, replacing the century-old iconic structure.
This engineering achievement is not just a transportation breakthrough but also a symbol of India’s growing expertise in modern railway infrastructure.
The new Pamban Railway Bridge is a vertical lift bridge built parallel to the existing 100-year-old Pamban rail bridge. It connects Mandapam (mainland Tamil Nadu) with Rameswaram Island across the Palk Strait.
This is India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, meaning a section of the bridge can be lifted vertically upwards to allow ships and vessels to pass underneath — a technological leap in maritime and railway engineering in India.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Between Mandapam and Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu |
| Type | Vertical Lift Railway Sea Bridge |
| Total Length | 2.07 kilometers |
| Span Lift Height | Up to 17 meters |
| Construction Started | 2020 |
| Operational From | April 2025 |
| Inaugurated By | PM Narendra Modi |
| Connectivity | Enhances rail access to Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi |
| Material Used | Steel structure with concrete pillars |
| Special Feature | Operates electrically with remote control lift mechanism |
A central portion of the bridge, spanning around 63 meters, can be vertically lifted up to 17 meters to allow passage of large ships and cargo vessels without disrupting rail traffic.
The bridge has been constructed with modern standards to support high-speed trains, improving travel time to Rameswaram.
The lift span is remotely controlled, using an electro-mechanical system for swift lifting and lowering, ensuring minimal delay and maximum safety.
Made with corrosion-resistant materials and concrete piers, the bridge is designed to endure harsh marine conditions and last for over 100 years.
Tourism Boost: Rameswaram is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and a popular tourist destination. The bridge will make travel more seamless.
Maritime Traffic Friendly: Unlike the older bridge that opened sideways and limited ship movement, the vertical lift allows taller vessels to pass easily.
Economic Development: Enhances trade routes and regional connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu.
National Pride: Represents India’s technological advancement in sea bridge infrastructure.
The original Pamban Bridge, built in 1914, was India’s first sea bridge and remained an engineering marvel for over a century. Its Scherzer rolling lift mechanism (a horizontal opening style) allowed ship passage but had operational limitations.
While it served faithfully, wear and age led to the decision to build a modern alternative that can meet 21st-century demands.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new bridge via video conferencing during his visit to Tamil Nadu. The event will be attended by top officials from Indian Railways, engineers, and political leaders from the region.
The inauguration also comes at a politically significant time, just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting developmental milestones under PM Modi’s leadership.
Dhanushkodi Rail Revival: With the new bridge, there are proposals to extend rail connectivity to the abandoned town of Dhanushkodi.
Smart Infrastructure Monitoring: Plans to install AI-based sensors for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.
The inauguration of the new vertical lift Pamban Bridge marks a historic moment for India’s railway and maritime connectivity. Not only does it modernize access to Rameswaram, but it also sets a new benchmark in engineering excellence.
